Project two

scholarly writing refresher course

Date: 2023

Role: Instructional Designer/SME

Project Type: E-Learning Course

This project aimed to provide graduate students with extra writing support. The university’s writing center primarily serves undergraduate students, and therefore, does not have the capacity to help graduate students at the level they sometimes need. This four-module course was built to support those lacking in scholarly writing skills and knowledge.

The course was hosted in an LMS (Canvas) and supplemented with module activities built in articulate rise. The LMS was a convenient way for graduate students to access the content and faculty to monitor progress. Evidenced-based concepts applied to this course included using Constructivism to encourage exploration and interaction of the content; Backwards Design since the course was built with the main outcome in mind; and Cognitive Load Theory was taken into consideration when building out concepts and design elements on screen.

This course was well-received by graduate students needing extra writing support. They felt the course was convenient to navigate and relevant to required program skills.  Faculty monitoring students’ progress were pleased with how easy it was to provide feedback to students.
